To start off the Embargo Act of 1807 was a law passed by the United State Congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson on December 22, 1807, that prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports. But why? Why the Act? Why would the U.S. want to prohibit all trade with other counties? The short answer to these questions is there was a serious problem plaguing the United States, and the government was willing to take desperate measures to solve it. This problem was Britain and France. These two countries had been at war since 10803 and American tried hard to stay neutral and keep up communication and trade with both countries.
