In music article “Why Is Elvis Presley Still The King?” on April 4, 2009 Scott Simon, a host of Weekend Edition's occasional series "On the Couch," speaks with Adam Victor, author of The Elvis Encyclopedia (an A-to-Z guide to Presley's life), and Gordon Stoker, a singer in the superstar's backup band The Jordanaires, to discuss the legacy of the man still known as "The King." In the interview, there are also NPR's Sylvia Poggioli and Elvis’fans: Jerry Sailor of South Bend, and Tess Foley of New Haven. When he was alive, Elvis Presley has been taunted and aped. In fact, he has sold more records in death than he did while alive. Today, Elvis Presley is considering as an iconic of the United States because of Presley's distinct style, the power of his voice and the inventive exuberance of his performance.
Mr. Stoker, who recorded with Presley from 1956 to 1970, describes Presley was the most concerned person with his looks. Stoker said, "Presley wore mascara on his eyes and his hair was dyed black." Furthermore, he had an amazing memory for songs. There's a story from his Army years where he would challenge people in his platoon to name any song and he would sing it. It cannot be denied that Elvis Presley’s principal importance as a musical influence and an innovator – like that of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Fats Domino – during the early years of rock ‘n’ roll. Presley was influenced by such a variety of R&B, C&W, Blues, Gospel, Pop, European, Broadway, Hollywood and even Mexican musicians, from the age of 12.
