Radio stations and music companies are very much controlled by consumers. At certain times during the day one can call into their favorite station and request a song of their choice. Big industry companies sign artist with huge commercial appeal in the hopes that consumers will buy anything the company puts out in support of their favorite artist. Younger generations in particular are very active and passionate about the music genres they like and support. Music and radio stations have an understanding that if they don’t take into account the consumers interest they will lose money. The way these stations and companies are run was not always like this. At one point in time the major companies in the music industry like Colombia and RCA controlled the interest of the people, and what music was popular enough to be played on radio waves. The music industry was very much segregated by race and class. The post World War II adolescence is the generation that changed this. They had become tired of …show more content…
This became a problem for major music companies like Mercury. Major companies were use to controlling what was popular in music, and their prejudice often interfered in their judgment. Anything that was associated with blacks or lower class citizens was considered bad music in their eyes, and only things that were associated with upper class white citizens was good music. The adolescents of this generation ignored this protocol and had begun buying from and supporting anyone who would give them the music they wanted. This made things very difficult for the major music companies; they no longer had an understanding of the market. Some of these companies vowed to protect the public from exposer to this indecent music that represented bad taste.
