Have you ever heard of Tesla Motors, SpaceX, or PayPal? If not, these are all Elon Musk’s companies that are having a major impact on some of America’s industries. Elon Musk is a South African entrepreneur in the United states, that works to to help make the world a better place, just like the superheroes in the comics he read in his earlier years. Since then, he has used his extraordinary drive and vision to overcome many difficult obstacles that come with starting up new companies. His drive and vision, is what helps him live deliberately. He lives deliberately, because he makes the impossible possible. His does this by refusing to listen to the countless people that told him that his ideas are too big and won’t work. The 45 year old South African native was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971, to Maye and Errol Musk. He is the oldest of the couple and has two siblings, a brother named Kimball and a sister named Tosca. For a while the family lived a happy life together. However, after Elon turned eight, the family started to fall apart. Maye and Errol got divorced. Musk and Kimbal living with their father. Living with Errol had a big impact on the boys, and the two don’t often talk about Errol. Errol liked giving the boys long lectures and taking the fun out of common childhood activities. In addition, Errol like being tough and strict on the boys. Elon even talked about not having a good relationship. He acknowledged this when he stated, “He’s good at making life miserable-that’s for sure. He can take any situation no matter how good it is and make it bad” (Vance). Not only did Elon have a bad childhood because of his father, but also because of where he grew up. Pretoria praised hypermasculine behavior in boy, and Elon had more a geeky and reserved personality, often leaving him without friends. During this time, the web was just starting to become accessible to the public as a result of Yahoo! and Netscape’s browser. In 1995, the brothers finally had an idea, and formed Zip2. Zip2 was ingenious, because very few people at that time understood how the internet worked. The point of creating Zip2, was to convince multiple small business owners to have websites or yellow pages on the internet to get more business. Zip2 allowed the companies to post content on the internet, including maps and directory listings. For the next four years, Elon poured himself into Zip2 and did all the necessary programming for it. Elon also was in charge of everyone, and often drove the employees mad through his tough deadlines. Yet, if Elon didn’t push his employees, Zip2 would not have been as successful. One former employee named Mohr acknowledged that Elon had to do what he did when he state, “You don’t get where Elon is now by always being a nice guy, and he was just so driven and sure of himself” (Vance). Unfortunately, after all of his hard work in making the company successful, Elon was kicked off the board, and no longer had a leading role in the company. At first, Musk had a hard time dealing with losing his first company, but decided not to give up on his entrepreneurship career. He then founded X.com with the money he received from the Zip2 deal.
