“Are you familiar with this man on the screen?” — asked Drew Higgins a sophomore engineering student, to a room full of his peers at the Leonard Center Speaking Contest. Drew was giving a presentation on the futuristic Hyperloop, using an image of its creator Elon Musk as his entry point. Before beginning his presentation, Drew provided some background knowledge explaining the reason behind creating such a mode of transportation. The motivation behind it was that Musk was having a difficult time moving between his companies Tesla and SpaceX situated about 360 miles apart. This information allowed Drew to nicely transition into his topic; The Hyperloop, by emphasizing how it would cut the travel between Los Angeles and San Fransisco to about 30 minutes. Here Drew established the problem at hand and offered an engineering solution using famous cities the audiences were familiar with to strengthen his pitch. …show more content…
This allocation of subtopics allowed the audience to get an idea of the scope of the presentation and what they could expect while simultaneously allowing Drew to organize his presentation efficiently due to the time constraint at hand.

Here Drew did a fantastic job of breaking down the complicated process of manufacturing The Hyperloop into bite size pieces. He made multiple references to the Concorde and Air Hockey making his presentation much more understandable and relatable. He decision to focus on a specific part on the complex structure was also a wise move since he was limited to a ten minutes. Andrew avoided over filing each slide with words, he only had a sentence or two and then expanded on the topic which is what we have been taught to do. Also he included a lot of pictures which helped his audience understand and see first hand what product he was talking about. Andrew also brought two ULine catalogs with him. The catalogs he passed around were examples of the ones ULine sends out to companies/customers several times each year. I looked through the thousands of products that they had available and found it very astonishing that Andrew was in charge of all of those products.…

I remember when Donald Trump first announced his political run for office. He built his campaign on the slogan: We’re going to Make America Great Again, “reinforced” by his bold claim of “building a wall”. When Trump got down into the weeds with Megyn Kelly during the first Fox News Republican debate, I sensed Donald Trump was a proud and arrogant man. I went on my own campaign against him; making phone calls, writing emails, calling news agencies and talk shows, posting madly to Facebook — whatever I could do to try to stop a really bad person from wrecking the Republican Party and damaging the nation. NeverTrump was my obsession, but it was, at that time, merely political for me.…

Every year there are hundreds if not thousands of people who are put in jail even though they are innocent. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee of Woodlawn high school was found dead in Linkin Park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was the one who took the blame. I think Adnan Syed deserves an appeal because in his trails there were inconsistent testimonies, cell phone call logs that had blurry information and the fact that Adnan did not have a violent or aggressive temperament.…

On September 12, 1962, president john F Kennedy delivered his “why we chose to go to the moon” speech at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The occasion of the speech was to address to the American people the importance of returning to space and being the first nation to place a man on the surface of the moon. Kennedy chose this time to deliver his speech because we were currently at the height of the cold war and the United States was beginning to lose the space and technological race against the Russian nation. Therefore Kennedy appeared at Rice University where he delivered his speech to a crowd that consisted of scientists, professors, students, and the general American people. The context that shaped Kennedys’ speech was the importance of mankind to achieve the near impossible feat of landing a human being on the surface of the moon and the profound impact that this accomplishment would have on the future of the human race.…
