At the onset of every Star Trek episode, the booming voice of William Shatner paints a picture of the future in which humans venture into space “to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” As a young child, this vision evoked an unabating wonder and passion for space. At that time, exploring space was a distant fantasy. However, upon discovering the power of science and technology in high school, I recognized it might not be so elusive after all. Business magnate, inventor, and engineer Elon Musk inspired me to pursue studies and a career in aerospace engineering, with the ultimate goal of making humanity a multi-planetary species.

Though there have been a few rapid unscheduled disassemblies (Musk’s subtle term for explosion) along the way, SpaceX continues to innovate. Musk proclaims, “Come hell or high water, we are going to make this work.” Although working on rockets and spacecraft would be riveting, the idea of working towards the ultimate goal of settling Mars is the most meaningful to me.

Indubitably, the construction of a habitat in the hostile environment of Mars would bring countless engineering
