Elmira, N.Y. (WENY) -- Earlier this week Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $25 million for 10 cities to reduce poverty, including Elmira.

Under the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative, Elmira and 9 other cities will receive parts of 25 million dollars to combat poverty. The program will provide 500-thousand dollars in planning and implementation grants. Along with a 20 million dollar grant pool to match private sector and foundation funding.

More than three million New Yorkers currently live in poverty, of which nearly one million are children. The money can be used for issues like housing, unemployment, food, education, health and neighborhood crime.
