Elly is cautious because she doesn’t want to do anything that could make her mother mad or upset with her. She expects Elly to be just like her mother and do whatever she commands. Elly is also expected to be very proper and old fashioned.

Having a lot fear can be from many things. In Elly’s case, she’s fears her mother. She doesn’t want to do anything that her mother won’t approve because then her mother will guilt Elly. Her mother is very lonely and only wants Elly to be with her.
