I was on a boat on my way to America. The ship was going to Ellis island , where all the immigrants had to come and be examined. I saw land many hundred metres away. The statue of liberty was big and tall. It was so different from Norway. The landscape, the language, the food, almost everything was different. But I knew I could get a better life in the US. I no longer had to be poor and sick. Back in Norway I lived in a small house with twenty other people. It was easy to get sick, and some days we would only drink water and eat breadcrumbs. I hoped I would have a well-paid job in America, maybe I could have my own house, and I could have a family if I wanted to. There was so many possibilities in America. At that point I had earned ten dollars. I took the train back to the city. I went to the same office I went to the last time, and they told me they did not had any jobs for me right now, so I went to another office. I had to que up for a few minutes, but then it was my turn. I told them I came from Norway two months ago, I was a farmer back in Norway and I had worked for another farmer in USA. The man behind the cash desk had to check with another man, and while I was waiting a man came over to me. He was about one meter and 70 centimetres high. It was easy to see he was a prosperous man. He was not fat but he had eaten well, I could clearly see. He said his name and said he had some farms around the country, and he needed a farmer who could take care of one of his farms. He asked me if I would be interested to try this out, and of course I said yes. He told there already was a young lady living and working there, and asked me if I was okay with that. I thought it was nice to have someone around. We went to the farm, and I loved it.it was surrounded by mountains, and it reminded me of Norway. I worked there for many years, and I fell in love with the girl who worked there. We got married and we now have four beautiful
