One of the best things about the American Dream is that it pertains to everyone; no matter where one is coming from they are part of the Dream. Most of those who come over to America start out from humble beginnings. As they look for work, land to own, and a place to settle down, they show one of the best parts of the American Dream; nevertheless, they never forget that which they came from before they ever arrived in the great country of the United States of America. Lou Reed proves this to readers in his poem Dirty Boulevard. The character Pedro lives in the oppression of his father and it was said that, “his father beats him ‘cause he’s too tired to beg”. This poem is written in a negative voice and Pedro is looking for something deeper. Pedro constantly speaks of getting away from the “Boulevard” (Reed). Similarly, immigrants think of the hope that lies ahead once they can leave their country. The poem Let America Be America Again, by Langston Hughes, sums up all other poems when he reasons, “ I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart… I am the immigrant clutching to the hope I seek--” (Hughes). He shows that all people are struggling in some way, shape or form and that in America there is always a sustaining hope. America is not just a place for the beaten down and out, but instead America is for the driven and the hardworking
