An elliptical trainer can be very effective in improving your fitness and burn calories. It can even give your leg muscles a gentle workout. What it will not do, but are selectively narrow or reduce fat from your legs. In fact, there is no such thing as the ability to burn fat from one specific part of the body.

Myth of Spot Reduction

Genetics is the biggest factor in the fat placement.
While resistance exercises can help build muscle, they do nothing to remove the fat. Choosing a higher level of resistance on the elliptical hoping to shed unwanted fat from a specific area of the body is useless. Instead, fat loss occurs fairly evenly over the entire body, with genetics plays a much larger role in where fat deposits accumulate or remain than can exercise.

Increase the resistance on the elliptical can also help tone muscles because muscles must work harder to push the pedals and arm levers on the machine. So when you increase the resistance you actually get a double benefit - work your muscles harder not only burns more calories, it also helps you achieve muscle tone. You do not have to worry about being too big or bulky, however. Aerobic exercise will not grow muscle just as serious weight training can.

Best Exercises for toning leg muscles

Squats and other strength exercises are best for toning muscles.
Selecting a very high level of resistance on the elliptical machine will give your legs a better workout. If you really want to sculpt these muscles, but you would be better to choose a different mode of exercise. Do strength training exercises like squats, heel raises and lunges are the best way to build muscle and tone your legs. If you want to get in an aerobic workout at the same time, since stair climbing or stationary cycling with high resistance are good
