Ellen James is the inspiration and original version of the Ellen Jamesians. At age 11 she was raped and got her tongue cut out so she couldn't tell on the perpetrators. A little after the feminist funeral also known as Jenny Field’s funeral Ellen got a seat next to the one and only T.S. Garp on the way flying home. Once Garp heard the real story behind Ellen and how her parents died in an accident, he asked her to move in with his family. Ellen loves writing and enjoys Garp’s books, she may even be his biggest fan.
While reading chapter 18 Ellen James voices her opinion on the Ellen Jamesians. She felt that they were dumb for making themselves suffer by cutting their tongues out. Ellen would love the chance to talk again but unfortunately

    Though I do not disagree with your description, I felt that much more was given to us in the reading from Harriet James. Your description of a slave’s life and southern society seemed to be vague and skimmed the surface. After reading James account of her experiences with her master, her mistress, and her lover, I found the account to provide a description that went beyond the reader’s imaginings and told the story we all feared to be the case with slaves in the south. James words put color into a story that we as students of history always imagined possible but because of inability to empathies or experience such accounts we could not truly understand.
