Ellen DeGeneres is a powerful figure who benefits society by sharing positive humor and news on her talk show, being herself, which gives people courage, and rewarding ordinary people for being kind to others.
To start, Ellen DeGeneres is a popular comedian who has positively impacted society. Ellen Lee DeGeneres was born in Metairie, Louisiana, on January 26, 1958. President Obama talked about how courageous she has been for these past years. "At a pivotal moment her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation's constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all" (Ehrbar "Medal of Freedom"). When she came out of the closet back in February 1997, it was a time when being gay was not as openly accepted. This affected her career, but after a while people started to open up more and now almost twenty years later everyone loves her. She inspired so many people who were scared to come out and still gives people courage to be themselves. In Obama's speech he references her movie character, Dory from Finding Nemo. "Ellen DeGeneres has showed us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place, so long as we just keep swimming" (Ehrbar "Medal of Freedom"). Ellen is a very positive person and her character Dory represents her very well. Dory is a positive and goofy fish with memory loss. A popular quote from this character is, "Just keep swimming". This quote has inspired many people to keep moving through life in their toughest moments. Ellen had her producer, Andy, go out dressed as a magician and told him, through an earpiece, to drop his bags and see who would help him. Ellen brought one of the guys on her show and gave him 1,000 dollars for being kind (Magical Cash). So many people watch Ellen's' show, so when people see something like that it would encourage others to do the same. Also Ellen helped the guy who wanted to be an actor majorly with the money he was given. Another time Andy went out in public in a full body cast and dropped two bags of oranges on the street. Eventually someone helped him and later Ellen gave them a reward (Body Cast). Ellen gave this woman 1,000 dollars for being kind. Surprisingly the lady said she didn’t want the money, because she believes in being kind to be kind not for a reward. Ellen still rewarded her for her kindness with the money. Another example would be when she had her producer, Amy, go to IKEA as a pregnant lady and knock over her cart and see who helps her (IKEA). Therefore, everybody can help anyone, they do not have to be someone in terrible trouble.
