Georges Braque once said, “art is a wound turned into light.” Art, more generally known as creativity, is a tool that is used for many different reasons. Ellen DeGeneres has used creativity as a tool of expression and healing throughout her life. The way that she has integrated creativity into her daily life has fabricated who she is, shaped a way to heal, and ultimately allowed her to build a solid community of followers that see her to be a genius in our society. Ellen DeGeneres was born in New Orleans in 1958. Her parents divorced when she was thirteen and DeGeneres moved to Texas with her mother. Together her mother and DeGeneres got through the difficult time that their family was going through. After DeGeneres graduated from high school, she moved back to New Orleans and worked several “dead-end jobs” includinga house painter, secretary, oyster shucker, sales clerk, waitress, bartender, and vacuum salesperson (St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture). DeGeneres continued to get a lot of hate for being a lesbian but instead of lashing out, she responded with comedy and activism. The LGBT community praised her and she spoke on behalf of the LGBT community at many protests and events. DeGeneres talks about how she never planned on being an activist but after the backlash of her coming out, she saw the statistic of gay suicide and bullying. Not only that but she first handedly felt the bullying and was the buttend of everyones jokes on magazines and TV. She personally felt the terrible things that were happening to the LGBT community. During one of her speeches DeGeneres said, “if by standing up for what I think is right makes me an activist, then I’m an activist,” and that was a defining moment for how she would be an activist not only in the LGBT community but also for many other
