“Elks helping integrating service members into civilian life”
Every day Elks can be found honoring and serving the military and veterans through various acts of kindness and generosity. Recognizing the Elks as a valuable partner in supporting service members and veterans, Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) Daniel Dailey and Command Major Sergeant John Troxell, Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff met with GER Zellen to discuss difficulties to of those separating from the service.

In his meeting with staff of Congressman Phil Roe (TN-1) and Senator Johnny Isakson (GA), both chairmen of the Committees on Veterans’ Affairs, GER Zellen and the staff brainstormed ideas ways to prevent veterans’ unemployment. Dr. Martin Eason, a fellow for House Committee on Veterans Affairs, proposed, “What if the Elks had a ‘National Veterans Employment Month’?” Ideas such as having lodges host career fairs, professional skills training and resume writing workshops arose in the conversation. All agreed a united effort by the Elks would significantly help veterans’ integration into civilian life easier as well as lower veterans’
