Elizabeth Yerxa and group of other pioneers started the first occupational science PhD program at USC in 1989. The purpose of occupational science is to bridge the gap in occupational therapy with practical evidence-based science by learning more in depth about human occupations. Soon after the movement grew fairly quickly and Ann Wilcock and associates to established the Journal of Occupational Science in 1993.
