The motivation of Elizabeth Proctor varies throughout the play. Her motivation in the beginning was to guilt John into feeling guilty about the affair he had with Abigail . Later in the play her new motivation is to be with John. This is shown later when she goes against her religion and lies in court to help him. She lies in court just so he can keep his good name. When the play is about to close she just wanted to see John free she later struggles with the choice to sign a false confession.
