Did you know the first American Flag had only 13 stars, along with the 13 stripes that still stay on the flag today? Born January 1st, 1752, in Gloucester City, New Jersey, and the eighth of 17 children, Betsy Ross is an American seamstress who is credited with the creation of the first American Flag. This was the first flag created under the Declaration of Independence, symbolizing America’s freedom. Elizabeth Betsy Ross was a seamstress, and from what it seems, she was known very well around the country of America. She went to a Quaker church, where she learned how to sew and other crafts common to that day. In 1773, at the age of 21, she crossed the river into New Jersey to live with her husband John Ross. Betsy Ross continued to work and own this upholstery business, making flags day and night for Pennsylvania. This wasn’t necessarily out of the ordinary for women, as many of them did sewing, and other handiwork. Ross married again a year later, to Joseph Ashburn, a sailor, who also met his end in 1781, when a ship he was on got captured by the British. Lastly, in 1783, Ross married for one last time to a man named John Claypoole. He had been in prison with her late husband Joseph and met Ross when he delivered Joseph’s farewell to her. John died 34 years later, after a long battle with disability. On January 30, 1836, Ross died at the age of 84 in Philadelphia, PA(“Betsy Ross”
