Elizabeth Barrett Browning Research Paper

Elizabeth Barret Browning was born on March 6, 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England, being the first in her family to be born in England. She was one of the most famous poets of the Victorian period and of the Romantic Movement. Romanticism was the largest artistic movement of the late 1700s that originated in Europe. She had lived with her father Edward Moulton-Barrett, who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica, her mother Mary Graham Clarke Moulton-Barret and 11 younger siblings. Mr. Barrett had some financial losses which forced him to sell Hope end, a 500 acre estate near Malvern Hills, and move his family three times between 1832 and 1837 finally settling at 50 Wimpole Street in London. Her poems showed her emotions toward a subject. She used a variety of writing styles and she took on both political and social causes, unlike many women at that time. She was a fantastic poet who was not a man and who was not afraid of what people were going to think. Since each sonnet did not have a specific name but a number most could not guess what each was going to be about. Each one of the 44 sonnets refers to her relationship with Robert Browning. Examples of how they refer to her relationship are: Sonnets 1 to 9 show the first stages of the relationship, 10 illustrates the changes of love and her personal transformation and 20 to 25 portray the union of two souls.
