From the moment high school students commit to their future colleges everything changes. They are no longer thought of as high school seniors or people apart of their hometown communities, they are thought in the light of the new institutions they will attend in the fall. Peers, teachers, and community members will now rank them with the same ranking their new school has. A select group of students, the excellents, will end up at elite schools like Harvard, Yale and Princeton to name a few. From the beginning of the these excellent students’ lives they have been earning elite education, defined as “prestigious institutions like Harvard or Stanford or Williams as well as the larger universe of second-tier selective school, but I [Deresiewicz] also mean everything that leads up to and away from them” (Deresiewicz 2). Elite schools have created a group of students who become, sheep, with the inability to think critically, be passionate, or to communicate with one another or others outside of school but still increase student’s life chances. …show more content…
The world believes that these students are getting the best education in the country, but in reality they are getting miseducated. From the moment the first moment they receive a sense of “smugness and self-congratulations that elite schools connive at from the moment that the fat envelopes arrive in the mail” (Deresiewicz 214). These students reality lives in “beneath the facade of affable confidence and seamless wee-adjustment” as the truth paint a much different picture (Deresiewicz 8). Depression and suicide run high on campus. Most students are isolated from each other, because of busy schedules and the high level of competition. Their lives before college was an activity after SAT classes, until they have no idea what they want
