Elite Pirates: A Leadership Analysis

Decent Essays
Currently, I am a part of the Elite Pirates, a social justice cohort whose main focus is on equality and civil discourse around East Carolina University's campus. Being a part of Elite Pirates has given me the opportunity to interact with the Board of Trustees and have discussions with people like Dr. Marc Lamont Hill and Sonia Sanchez. In addition, we also focus on creating leaders within our group and on campus. Our leadership definition is "Leadership is the relation process of inspiring, empowering, and influencing positive change." This definition embodies how I would envision assisting with the Diversity committee because the most important part about diversity is inspiring other to be their authentic selves. Also, empowering them to

Diversity is being surrounded by people of different backgrounds and learning from their unique experiences and connecting with them. As a Resident Advisor I will develop a diverse and inclusive floor by promoting awareness of the vast number of different cultures and backgrounds present not only on the floor but in the building as well. I would also make it a point to ensure that every voice on the floor carries the same weight; even if their voice and opinion is in the minority, I want them to know that not being in the majority does not means that they are wrong. Furthermore, I want to bring in a speaker from the Multicultural Centre to discuss the social customs of a culture that is underrepresented. I would also take them to guest speakers…

The Mediterranean pirates were unbearable by any standard, and Cilicia was full of them. The pirates were also on Crete and Dalmatia, which is right next to Italy. The pirates even supported the Mithridates against Rome in battle. The Senate was doing nothing about the pirate problem and the pirates continued to rise and cause issues for Rome. They decided to send M. Antonius to fight the pirates, a mistake considering he lost, giving him the title “Creticus”.…

I would make a strong addition to the Junior Board because I believe that my professional journey represents the Lime Connect’s mission of “rebranding disability through achievement”. I first met Lime Connect when I was in tenth grade and entered a Lime Connect essay contest that was sponsored by the New York City Department of Education. At this event, I met Susan and was instantly inspired by the Lime Connect’s innovative approach to redefining disability. I later had the opportunity to apply to the fellowship and fully immerse myself in the Lime Connect community. When it came time to apply for full time positions, I knew that I wanted to apply to Lime’s partners because I knew that they would be inclusive environments.…

Meeting with the Spectrum group today (an LGBTQ group of students on campus) was the essence of social advocacy that includes actions that would benefit individuals, groups, and the campus society itself. After speaking with Abby & Destinee from CICI, it is clear that separate LGBTQ groups need to work together and learn about each other. Hence, I am trying to be a liaison for the Prism group (LGBTQ faculty and staff), Spectrum, Student government LGBTQ senator, and the chairperson for the presence of LGBTQ on campus, along with Lucy Cross, to create a conversation between all the groups so they have more solidarity and a presence on campus. I look forward to see how this will work out. I believe that this will help challenge campus prejudice…

I am writing to express my interest in the Federal Diversity Initiative Program. Based on my skills, work experience and leadership experience, this program both complements my experience and aligns with my professional goals Growing up in the Washington D.C area, fascination with the great history that not only surrounds this country, but also defines the unique American experience, was a natural attraction for me. Living near the Washington Monument and other beautiful memorials; the magnitude of the efforts that made the United States a reality, were sources of great reflection for me as a kid in Arlington, VA. This reflection and a sense of awe led me to the realization that sometimes it only required one person or one idea to spark a movement…

My experience with this starts at a very young age. In my early years I was a brownie and Girl Scout, and not only did the Girl Scouts teach me about truth and service but it also taught me what it takes to be a great leader. These are qualities that I have kept with me throughout my life and have also given me multiple opportunities where I was able to strengthen them. One of the opportunities being was one of four students chosen to attend S.D.L.C. or the Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Here I not only learned about diversity and inclusion but I was also able to gain even more valuable tools and skills that I use in my everyday life.…

He is driven and wants to make a real difference in the world, as do I. The past two presentations from Dr. Holmes and Yantee have shown me that Higher Education is not for those who do not have thick skin. Sometimes, you will sometimes have to face great adversity when trying to implement programs or trying to be a part of the community. The biggest challenge I foresee in this chosen career path of becoming a diversity officer is that I am a white cisgendered male. My identity will affect how I am perceived in the student body, especially minority groups.…

In spite of the views as espoused by the scholars above, diversity can be managed properly to achieve the intended benefits. The concept of diversity management is clear and unambiguous in definition and it is often interchanged with the term managing diversity. The concept was first introduced in the 1980s in the United States. According to Thomas, R. (1991), ‘Managing diversity is an idea whose time has come. A number of corporations and organizations are becoming conscious of the fact that a diverse workforce should not be perceived as a burden is not a burden, but rather their greatest potential strength when managed properly’ (Thomas 1991, viii).…

Diversity and inclusion in sports organizations is a challenging subject in the sports organization. After reading Ellen Staurowsky interview from the Diversity in Sports Organizations Interview Series, I realized how much gender inequality and race are still an issue in the sports business. However, the first key points that Ms. Staurowsky keeps emphasizes, is how important leadership is. Managers play a very important part in creating and maintaining diversity and inclusion in the workplace. In order for this to work, promotion of diversity must start with the CEO and work down (top-down).…
