There are the obvious changes - increased military presence, secret police, conspiracy, bribery… the list goes on. In tandem with the more ‘concrete’ parts of being occupied, there is also the way that interpersonal relations were shaped and impacted. Thomas Blatt’s From the Ashes of Sobibor provides the reader with an understanding of just how severely the daily lives of individuals were altered, interpersonally but also intrapersonally.…

Ash Lawn-Highland presents a typical Colonial, Georgian style façade that presents a red brick foundation, which runs along the structure’s base turning into fieldstone along the west wing. Attached to a stone stylobate, a single brick step runs half the length of the porch. Adjoining the stylobate are two wooden plinths, which support Tuscan columns. Sandy Scroll awoke to the sound of rusted bells – not so much a chime as a series of dull, metallic thunks in the distance – and was greeted by the familiar scents of dust and ash and centuries-old paper. She rubbed a beige hoof against her aching temple and shivered at the frigid draft that blew through the window in front of her. The fire on her hearth must have died while she had slept, and it had been ages since this town had produced glass with which to ward off the winter winds. Sand lifted her head from her desk and glanced outside. It was dawn, or perhaps dusk, just as it had been for every hour of every day for as long as anypony could remember.…

BEAUTIFUL HANDS Moragan lay on the floor of the upstairs parlor next to the window, her bare feet propped on a settee, studying the passage in her primer that Anne would listen to her read aloud. Mindful of keeping herself looking neat and tidy she made sure her crisp white apron and bright yellow skirts were not bunched up underneath her so that they would not become wrinkled. Her toes kept time with the rhythm of her reading. She read with the McGuffey Third Eclectic Reader resting on her chest, her head on a pillow borrowed from the armchair to which the settee belonged.…
