It all began when Elisa checked into The Cecil Hotel on January 26, 2013. She was supposed to check out after five days of sight- seeing, but after not hearing back from their daughter, Elisa’s family finally reported her missing on January 31, 2013. Upon finding her body and her possessions far from her, the security footage was checked, and the hotel staff said, “Lam was exiting and re-entering the elevator, talking and gesturing in the hallway outside, and sometimes seeming to hide within the elevator, which itself appears to be malfunctioning” (Elisa Lam and the Cecil Hotel). The hotel also claimed that it was impossible for Lam to have reached the rooftop water tank without setting off an alarm. The police actually tested this alarm, and it did ring. Many people have theories of how it happened but none of them were ever confirmed. The first theory had to do with paranomal activity. Some suggest that she was performing the “Elevator Game” incorrectly and that spirits may have killed her. The second theory was that Elisa committed suicide after having mild hallucinations in the elevator. The last theory was that she was murdered. There has been no evidence that proves that Elisa Lam was, or was not, murdered.
