Despite the fact that Elie’s father wasn’t very present in his life, he cared for and listened to his father. Wiesel states that his father is, “... always being up to his neck in communal affairs and not knowledgeable in family matters. He was always elsewhere, lost in thought.” (Wiesel, 43) Even though their relationship wasn’t the ideal father/son relationship, they still loved and cared for each other. Wiesel writes, “I did not fast. First of all, to please my father who had forbidden me to do so.” Elie was not required to stay with or obey his father. He does so anyway. Elie could leave his father to help himself survive, but Elie shows love for his father when Rabbi Eliahou is unknowingly abandoned by his son. As Eliezer was in pain, a kind girl said to him, "Bite your lips, little brother…Don't cry. Keep your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now…Wait. Clench your teeth and wait … " (Weisel, 53) This gives him hope to continue on. He also sees the many people who try to uplift and help him. He writes, “ I felt sick at heart. How kindly they treated me. Like an orphan. I thought: Even now, my father is helping me.” ( Weisel, 75) He is treated with great love even though those that help in are going through the same pain and struggle. They do all they can do to help
