Faith is the complete trust in someone or something. Elie Wiesel, the author of the memoir Night, in Night he writes about his spiritual journey during the Holocaust. This was a cruel time for over six million Jews with only their faith to hold onto. The Holocaust was a time whenever Jews were being exterminated because they were seen as less than any other human.
When Elie enters Auschwitz, he questions his faith for the first time when he witnesses Nazi cruelty. “How could it be possible for them to burn people, children, and for the world to keep silent?” (Wiesel 24). “ I thanked God, in an improvised prayer, for having created mud in His infinite and wonderful universe” (Wiesel 28). This statement shows how strong Elie’s faith was because with all the horrific things going on around him he still had faith.
The next part of Elie Wiesel’s journey talks about how he questions God's way. Elie says “ I did not deny God’s existence, but I doubted His absolute justice” (Wiesel 34). This simply meaning he didn't understand why God was allowing these bad things to take place. The next chapter i'm about to talk about is to me when Elie hit the bottom of his faith. This time occurred during new year's Elie says “ I was alone terrible alone in a world without God and without man” (Wiesel 50). Elie had lost all faith in God.
My conclusion to the memoir Night is sometimes a spiritual journey is a good thing. I came up with this theory through all of the rough times Elie went through and him still having the will to survive. This spiritual journey Elie went on wasn't just about God it also dealt with the other jews and the protection people and Elie's father.
