He no longer had a name. Along with his name Elie makes a lot of other changes in himself. When his father was struck by a gypsy Elie did nothing about it. He began to accept the changes going on around him with little remorse. He accepted the fact that his father was hit and he accepted that to others he had no name. Throughout the book when he is called by guards or anyone of importance he is not called by his name, he is called A-7713. This represents that to the Germans they are not people. Jews are numbered and herded together like animals. They are used as workers and starved, with no one caring whether they live or die. Giving them numbers to go by instead of names makes that all easier. It makes them less human.
“Whenever I dreamed of a better world, I could only imagine a universe with no bells.” Chapter #5 Page #69-70 For Elie the bell is a symbolism of being controlled. After being separated into different blocks from his father Elie wants to be with him as much as he can, but is only able to when the bell allows. The bell tells them what to do and when to do it. In a world with no bells he could do what he wanted.

For Elie and his father to have both survived out of hundreds is incredible. The numbers given in this quote are just a portion of the amount of people that actually died. Victims in the other wagons are surely facing the same punishments. This quote represents how easy it was for the Germans to kill the Jews. If that many were dead in just that short of a train ride, think of how many were lost the whole time Elie was in the camp.
“On April fifth, the wheel of history turned.” Chapter #9 Page #107 This quote represents Elie’s hope and freedom. On this day they were told that the resistance had not given up on them and that they would help save them. It was the first actual movements of the resistance that Elie could see.
