“It was from that moment I began to hate them, and my hate is still the only link between us today. They were our first oppressors. They were the first of the faces of hell and death.” Chapter #1 Page #17 This quote represents the chapter by showing how the things occurring around Elie are not right. These are also some of Elie’s first signs of real, negative emotion towards someone and how he is unhappy with the situation. It reveals the first steps of their oppression and how unjust they are being treated. These cruel people that come into Elie’s life are just the first of many, but they are the first. It is those people that Elie will remember uprooting his life. They led him to further oppression and cruelty. It is hard not to hate the …show more content…
He no longer had a name. Along with his name Elie makes a lot of other changes in himself. When his father was struck by a gypsy Elie did nothing about it. He began to accept the changes going on around him with little remorse. He accepted the fact that his father was hit and he accepted that to others he had no name. Throughout the book when he is called by guards or anyone of importance he is not called by his name, he is called A-7713. This represents that to the Germans they are not people. Jews are numbered and herded together like animals. They are used as workers and starved, with no one caring whether they live or die. Giving them numbers to go by instead of names makes that all easier. It makes them less human.

“Whenever I dreamed of a better world, I could only imagine a universe with no bells.” Chapter #5 Page #69-70 For Elie the bell is a symbolism of being controlled. After being separated into different blocks from his father Elie wants to be with him as much as he can, but is only able to when the bell allows. The bell tells them what to do and when to do it. Elie wants to be in a world where no one is controlling him, especially not a bell. Throughout the novel bell acts as one of the Jews oppressors. They help the Germans control them. In a world with no bells he could do what he wanted.

Throughout the chapter they faced harsh conditions that killed many. A lot of people were taken by the cold or died in their sleep. For Elie and his father to have both survived out of hundreds is incredible. The numbers given in this quote are just a portion of the amount of people that actually died. Victims in the other wagons are surely facing the same punishments. This quote represents how easy it was for the Germans to kill the Jews. If that many were dead in just that short of a train ride, think of how many were lost the whole time Elie was in the camp.

“On April fifth, the wheel of history turned.” Chapter #9 Page #107 This quote represents Elie’s hope and freedom. On this day they were told that the resistance had not given up on them and that they would help save them. It was the first actual movements of the resistance that Elie could see. From that day forward they had began to hope for the future more. That day started what would result in the Jews Liberation. It was a turning point in their captivity. April fifth represents the beginning of the

In the book, it shows how people's emotions or feelings changed towards the people they love when times get worse. For example, before Elie’s family and neighbors had been in the ghetto, they had promised each other with comfort and safety. Also, when the young men had beat Madame Schachter when she had her vision of the fire, instead of comforting her, they had beat her in front of her own son. Finally, when Elie had to watch or leave his own father too die for his own survival. All these are examples of how bad people treat each other in times of suffering.…

The camp’s atmosphere was wearing down on Elie and his father, causing his father to become ill because he was not healthy or treated properly, causing Elie to take care of him. “I knew he was running out of strength, close to death, and yet I abandoned him. I went to look for him” (Wiesel 106). This proves how Elie was supposed to take care of his father because he was getting weak, the fact that Elie left him was taking a toll on him because he went back to look for him. Being with his father, Elie’s feelings were slowly going away the more and more his father was sick.…

" Jews were stricken of their freedom, not due to a bell. Everyone was caged at a camp where only the healthiest of the starved survived. They went through physical exams and if they failed, they would be killed. The Jews were never seen as people to the Germans nor were they treated like people. Elie, his father and every other Jew incarcerated by the Nazi forces were stricken of their freedom and forced to live under the constraints of a bell.…

Elie compared men to beasts and how beasts are brutal monsters that will unhesitantly kill one another to survive. The moment that a single piece of bread fell to the floor a war began, but instead of two sides the war was every man for himself. They had no care in the world for the other men around them and even sacrificed their own bodies and in some cases their own lives for something as small as a piece of bread. The cause was none other than the dehumanization the Hitler Party expressed on the Jews.…

“One more stab to the heart, one more reason to hate. One less reason to live.(109)” Throughout Night by Elie Wiesel, Nazis show time and time again how relentless they will be with their physical and emotional abuse towards prisoners in concentration camps. Through understanding the ways Nazis dehumanize Jews and other minorities, we can see three very important steps to bringing them back into normal life: Non physically abusive treatment, giving them goals, friends, a reason to live, and a non-fluctuant lifestyle, and providing former prisoners with more diverse lifestyle choices. One of Nazi Germany’s most well known ways of dehumanizing people is by physically abusing them.…

“Dehumanization is the process by which the Nazis gradually reduced the Jews to little more than “things” which were a nuisance to them.” For this reason, the conditions in the concentration camps were gradually taking away Eliezer’s every quality and attributes that made him human. For example, in the novel Night, Elie lost his sense of self during the Holocaust through his suffering and despair because his identity gets stripped away, he lost his connection and his faith in God, and he no longer cared about anyone but his own survival. The first example of how Elie lost his sense of self during the Holocaust was when his identity was stripped away.…

After hearing these bold words, Elie’s feelings change as he has a realization that he can only survive if he goes on alone. Elie understands that surviving requires selfish thinking, and it is “everyman for himself” when trying to stay alive in the adverse conditions of the camps. Elie must not “think about others” because the thoughts will only slow him down and handicap him in the long run. He has to put everything out of his mind, “even [his] father” who has played a large role in his life and survival so far. At the start…
