Modern sensibilities argue for total equality in relationships, railing against traditional relationship structures wherein the male is the dominant partner. This is an admirable view, and one that commendably dismisses gender roles. However, such absoluteness neglects to consider the possibility of intellectual and social inequalities between members of a relationship that could make some form of dominance beneficial. Throughout his comedies, William Shakespeare examines this possibility by demonstrating both the benefits of adhering to a power structure and the dangers of failing to recognize the necessity of having one. Certain methods of gaining power may be questionable, and for some the premise of an inherently unequal relationship will…

I recently went to the Ulrich Art Museum on the Wichita State Campus. This museum had many works of the Spanish painter Joan Miro, who lived from 1893-1983. His modern artwork uses an abstractness that causes the viewer to have their own interpretation on the work, so it might be drastically different than his intentions. I have chosen to analyze two of his paintings that he painted in the early-to-mid 1900’s.…

Consider the role of the narrator in both Benito Cereno and Bartleby. Follow your leader – three words that echo through both of these texts and symbolise Melville’s role as a narrator in distinct ways. His narrative diction in Benito Cereno and Bartleby is mechanically impressive but speaks volumes as to how he felt in relation to the new capitalist society America was rapidly evolving into and the problem of slavery to which the old America was clinging to. In these texts the lawyer in Bartleby and Captain Delano in Benito Cereno are both so blinded by pre-conceived notions which have been hammered into them by society that they are blatantly unaware of the reality that is staring them in the face. They have become so accustomed to following…
