Elena and Lila are bound to the poverty-stricken ghetto of Naples, yet both characters have a desire to acquire wealth and escape far beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood. In the novel, Elena Ferrante depicts the two girls, Elena and Lila, as curious, determined, and intellectual children. As a result, Lila has always been displayed as a brave, daring, and courageous individual, often questioning the world around her and doing what she pleases. However, when Lila and Elena are near their destination, Lila refuses to continue, as demonstrated when the author states, “There was something-something she had on the tip of her tongue but couldn’t make up her mind to tell me-that suddenly impelled her to drag me home in a hurry” (pg. 77).
