Everyday life can lead one into territory that will change them for the rest of their life. As such, a mother-to-be receiving news that her child will likely be born with a disability is one of those situations that can plunge that mother-to-be into an ethical dilemma. One will normally approach the ethical dilemma with much trepidation because the implications of the decision rendered could perhaps affect several individuals’ other than the mother-to-be and the unborn child. The ethical dilemma of abortion will be the subject of a comparison between the Christian worldview and the Naturalism worldview of an atheist.
Ethical Dilemma One of the biggest events in a woman’s life is the joy of bringing a child into the world. From conception to the birth of the child a new mother will experience a wide spectrum of emotions and experiences. After a long-suffering journey to conceive, she was finally pregnant, only to be faced with the ethical dilemma of terminating her pregnancy, or carrying a child to term that was afflicted with Down Syndrome. Susan engaged in Christian counseling to help her better understand the consequences and possible collateral damage her decision could trigger. She researched the pros and cons of raising a child with Down Syndrome, she thought about her career and the impact a child with a disability would have on that aspect of her life, and most importantly, she sought out the guidance and help of Jesus. Through prayer and obedience Susan was able to arrive at the decision that an abortion was the solution that was right for her situation and for her unborn
