In early Islamic culture, a transgender woman called a mukhannathun, a woman who had been born a male but with natural femininity, was accepted and allowed to have relations with men or women. The mukhannathum held an important position in society, associated with music and entertainment, and are stated in the Qur’an as companions of women. They were companions of Prophet Muhammad and his wives, and close enough to accompany them in their homes. However, this is significant as a woman’s chamber is known to be a holy place for Muslims, and is forbidden to strangers and most unrelated men.…
When raising a transgender child it is a very delicate process, much like any child with a disorder, it will take time and patience. Raising a transgender child isn’t something anyone is prepared for. The question is,” how can a parent be sure they are making the right decision for their child” (McCloskey 291)? Most parents already know when their child is showing different gender schemes that are not of the social norm. In the case of Brandon Simms, his mother Tina Simms states that before Brandon was two years old.…
Having acceptance from a transgender’s family might be a Being transgender might be accepted by one’s family however, it might not be okay to the world. I believe the appropriate pronouns should be addressed to them. Parents should respect and accommodate to their kid’s…
In a recent study published in the UPI Health News, transgender adults were found to be twenty two times more likely to commit suicide than the general population. These individuals struggle with the hardship of being different than what is considered “normal”. In Lusus Naturae, a girl also faces the problem of being different from the community. In The Lost Children of Taum, Dan Barry exposes the treatment of families of wedlock. In Know Thyself, Bence Nanay explains the constant struggle of being someone who is different from their perception of themself.…
Homework Assignment #3 Diagnosis: Gender Identity Disorder After watching the documentary, I noticed that transgender people often go through a series of changes, both physically and psychologically. And during many times transgender people become anxious and depressed, and they most often start having some suicidal thoughts, and there are some people that might face bullying and self-dislike such as the girl in the documentary. According to Capuzza (2015), he proved some studies that was conducted on the transgender people showed that these types of people suffer from unusual sexual and physical abuse, as well as discrimination in during job employment in our society. I learned that many parents disagree with allowing their kids deciding what gender they want to be and they usually discourage these actions.…
Non-Binary and Transgender People When a child is born the first thing their parents hear is, “Congratulations it’s a girl,” or “Congratulations it’s a boy”. Already trying to enforce the idea that there are only two genders the moment they take their first breath. JAC Stringer of the Heartland Trans* Wellness Group defined, gender binary as the cultural belief of only two genders existing and they have to correspond to the appropriate sex. This social construct is iterated on a daily basis whether it is through medical institutions, language or applications. As a result of its dominance in society, the gender binary system is highly exclusive towards non-binary and transgender people.…
Transgender Kids (LGBT Documentary) - Real Stories This film was very instructional as to how much times have changed, I watched it with my mom and she was a bit shocked as to how relaxed and open minded these parents were. I was born in the 90’s and well it wasn’t something very usual and was looked at as something abnormal in many ways. Also, I come from a very traditional Mexican family that would keep this sort of situation as a family secret. I’m the more liberal side of my immediate family and I consider myself very open minded but when watching the film and getting to know these families I started to question myself as to what I would do if I was a parent of a transgender child.…
In a list of “simple ways” for families to support specifically transgender and non-binary youth, methods include “being an advocate” and calling out discrimination, “educat[ing] yourself” on concerns facing the community, and always…
In other words Transgenderism is not a choice for these children. In the article “I am a girl” by (Eric Alder) he writes A.J. says to his mother “Mom, "Do you know that I 'm a girl? I 'm really a girl on the inside" (Alder). This is a four year old child telling his parent that he knows who he is in terms of his gender identity. Transgender children are misunderstood and their parents are vilified simply because they are different.…
The literature paints a picture of a high need population with many complex, interwoven needs which lead to negative outcomes; despite this, this population is characterized as being resilient due to various strategies and coping mechanisms (Singh, Hays, & Watson, 2011). Singh et al. (2011) define resilience as “a set of learned behaviors evolving from an individual’s system of beliefs that precedes one’s ability to cope.” Being able to define oneself, being aware of oppressive forces in order to identify transgender-positive messages, connecting with a supportive community, and developing hope for one’s future are all empowering coping mechanisms identified by the community (Singh et al. 2011).…
Gender dysphoria, also known as gender identity disorder, is a condition which “involves a conflict between a person’s physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify” (1). People with gender dysphoria may feel significant distress and are more likely to experience depression because they feel a disconnect with their bodies and are unable to function with the correlated norms of their gender (1 &2). Trans genders may behave as their true selves to counter act the depressive symptoms of gender dysphoria: usually trans genders will change their clothing and hairstyles to feel more satisfied with themselves even if they go against the gender norms (1). Another very effective treatment for this disorder according to pediatrician and genealogist Dr. Jason Jaron, is allowing the individual to express their gender in the way they feel is suitable (2). There are three main methods to achieve the desired outcome for people suffering from gender dysphoria; puberty suppression, hormone therapy and surgery (2).…
However, recent studies have shown that the brain of a transgender person follows similarly to gray matter patterns of the gender that they identify with (Henig 1). With some in society still unwilling to accept this, numerous foundations and camps have opened up to protect these children so that they may safely discover their gender identity. California’s Bay Area Rainbow Day Camp, just one of these places that provides a safe space for children (Henig 1). It is unfortunate to watch the lengths that others must take to protect children, because apparently allowing a child to express themselves is a radical statement now a days. Among all of society’s problems, the worst appears…
Transgender people have been in society since the beginning, but have been manipulated into hiding who they really are due to society’s insensitivity, lack of knowledge, and ability to classify. In this essay I will be focusing on the gender roles, along with the impact they have had on the Transgender Movement, the change in the movement, the transgender empowerment leaders, and the influences they are portraying along their journey, all…
As it starts in childhood, it is hard to establish the difference between a child who does not conform to gender roles, and one who is desiring to be the other sex. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health states that its Standards of Care separates medical treatment for adults and younger adults rather than focusing on an etiological explanation for gender dysphoria. There was a debate between gender dysphoria being a physical condition, that required specific treatment, and a physiological condition, that required psychotherapeutic intervention (Castaneda, 2014). It is important to note that there may not be an explanation of the disorder at all. Some medical professionals argue that there are as many as nine different types of gender; this directly conflicts with our binary view of only two sexes.…
