Elements Of Resilience

Mental health and resilience are paramount factors in overcoming obstacles and adversity. While it is often thought that resilience is merely one’s ability to overcome adversity, resilience is composed of several individual components that determine whether a person will conquer the obstacles that arise in life, and to what extent these obstacles will impact the person. In her article, Harrington (2012) lists several “key elements” of resilience which include emotional, spiritual, and family health (pp. 2-3). In this essay, I will examine my strengths and weaknesses in these areas of mental health and resilience and apply them to a difficult challenge that I have faced in my own life. A person’s individual level of strength in each of these …show more content…
Since the miscarriage, both Adrian and I have grown more concerned with the welfare of children in our community. As a detective at the sheriff’s office, I have devoted more time to assisting other detectives with investigations involving child abuse and neglect. Adrian is seeking her degree in the social work field and is currently working part-time at a local shelter for victims of domestic violence. In these ways, we are both actively working to improve the lives of children in our community. In order to develop the individual factors of mental health, a person should take an honest personal assessment of each component, determine areas in which a deficit exists, and consciously make an effort to strengthen those parts of their life. By enhancing each aspect of psychological health, a person becomes better prepared to not only handle the obstacles of his or her own life, but also assist in improving the welfare of those around …show more content…
It is a web-based resource for the submission of academic writing for evaluation and critique (Smarthinking, 2016). Smarthinking also provides students with a web-based tutoring service designed to help them improve their writing skills. After submitting my essay to Smarthinking’s website and reviewing the results from its critique, I am not convinced of its value as a web-based paper evaluation tool. While it did find a comma error in my essay that was missed by Paperrater, I prefer the stricter analysis of Papperater’s website (Paperrater, 2016). Notwithstanding, after reviewing the feedback provided by the site with regard to my submitted essay, I found Smarthinking’s scoring parameters extremely informative and interesting. Before using the site, I was unaware of the many dynamics in essay writing. Despite scoring a 6 of 6 in all areas of the paper, the site offered suggestions to further improve my writing skill. However, because this is only my first class at Bethel University, I suspect I will have no shortage of opportunities to explore Smarthinking’s suggestions in strengthening my abilities in future writing

Our text focuses on resiliency and being able to overcome adversity faced in everyday life. Jeanette shows multiple time through her life that she is able identify her own individual strengths within herself and build upon them a better life. In her short story “Resilience”, Barry uses both visible and written cues to show the several demons that existed in her childhood. Her written thoughts are restrained by her present emotions but the dialogue is a glimpse into how she still feels about past situations. In one of the panels, Barry discusses how she began “doing things that scared me but made me feel exhilaratingly whole”(Barry 71). Her drawings show how Barry usually gave into sex in school because of a past rape; she didn’t want to do it, but she couldn’t stop.…

The Downside of Resilience is an academic journal written by Jay Belsky. In the journal Belsky mentions how some children come out of developmental programs more intellectually capable and with satisfactory behavior. However, others come out of the same developmental programs completely opposite of the ideal child. Belsky mentions how there is no single contributing factor to this division, but genetics may seem to play a part. Belsky then mentions the biology of the genes and two alleles.…

Speak, “The Third and Final Continent”, and “The Art of Resilience” all contain similar themes woven throughout their texts. All of the themes center around the idea of handling adverse situations, yet each author could individualize the idea enough in order to make their text memorable. In Speak, Laurie Halse-Anderson focuses on how people cope with harrowing events, and the healing process that followed.. Hara Estroff Marano exhibits how people derive strength from the onerous periods of their life, as well as how someone’s parents do not dictate who they will become. “The Third and Final Continent”, by Jhumpa Lahiri, depicts how people endure unpleasant changes within their lives, to eventually find happiness and success.…

I see resilience as the ability to adapt to changing situations, not giving up when the going gets tough, rising above and beyond difficult circumstances, and the ability to cope or ‘bounce back’ when you surpass your own comfort zone (Youth Research Centre, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, p 14, n.d.). Spending a week out in the Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park was a sure test of resilience, we often found ourselves in a position we weren’t accustomed to, whether that be using ‘dug’ to dig a hole to use a toilet, using a trangia or msr to cook our meals, paddling vast distances in varying conditions and simply just living in the outdoors away from civilisations and technology. However there was one defining moment where I found myself…

Resilience in psychology refers to the capacity of an individual to endure adverse stress while maintaining a functioning physical and psychological state (Wu et al., 2013). Resilient individuals are able to adapt to stressful triggers and cope effectively. Furthermore, it can help to minimise the negative effects of trauma, and stress.…

Resilience is known as “the capacity to cope effectively in a difficult situation and maintain a healthy disposition in the face of disaster, pain, or adversity” (Rutter, 1990, as cited by Peng et al., 2014). Researchers have associated Resilience with involving internal factors such as self-concept, self-esteem, self-confidence and temperament as well as external factors like family environments, education and role models. Fredrickson, Tugade, Waugh & Larkin (2003) conducted a study on the aftermath of 911 terrorist attacks and found that individuals who were previously reported as being resilient showed more positive emotions, which following a crisis essentially acted as a buffer for resilient people against becoming depressed. This suggests that boosting resilience in patients suffering from depression can potentially increase their positive emotions, and as a result can lessen depressive symptoms. Gerson & Fernandez (2013) looked at increasing adaptive explanatory styles, they developed a Programme for Accelerated Thriving and Health (PATH).…

It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing.
