Elements of Personal Narrative

This year at school, things weren't so great. First and second period classes were especially hard because, kids would bully me in class when the teacher wasn't looking. I think the two essays that are most critical for students to read is “This I Believe” by Jennifer in New York and “This I Believe” by Elizabeth in California. They both have the same title and are similar at the same time. “This I Believe” by Jennifer talks about how people should treat others the way they would want to be treated. This is very important in life. You should never treat someone worse than you would expect them to treat you.…

After years of blood, sweat, hours on end of practicing on and off the course, and with plenty of tears, I reached my childhood dream of making the varsity golf team as a freshman. Having commitment, playing not only for myself but for a team too, battling constantly along with hurt feelings from my self proclaimed golf expert of a father shaped me from a young girl into the responsible, trustworthy, dependable woman I am today. Sixth grade summer going into seventh, my pesky father managed to score me the opportunity of playing golf with the varsity girls golf team. At the time I had only played golf for approximately two years prior competitively. Not having the best background knowledge on how some girls act and play at the varsity level, I was wide eyed and taking notes.…

I believe that every day we have the power to make the world into a better place. Whether it's by saying "please" or "thank you", recycling one can of soda, or just paying someone a compliment, these forms of kindness is what unify our community and inspire us to be good citizens. Growing up my father informed me that "In America, there are no such things as friends and life is always a competition. " This was very puzzling to me as a child because I understood that competition is what drives our society forward, but I never accepted the fact that solidarity was the way to success. Did having all A's and having immense power in class rankings define success?…

It couldn’t have been past 10 a.m. when the alarm went off. We all knew what it meant- we were firefighters, it’s what we do. The fire chief told us that an apartment complex in downtown Boston had gone ablaze, and that it was really bad. We quickly got into our uniforms and hopped on as the fire truck left the station. We were a few miles away before I saw the smoke, a dark giant against the bright blue sky.…

I was eight and in California visiting with my vegetarian grandparents. We were being seated in a vegan restaurant for a late lunch. Did that really just happen? “Come join us at soccer tryouts next Friday at the main field after school!” read the big, white flyer which I had picked up previously in the week after hearing about this eye-opening news during morning announcements. I was sitting on the bench outside reading the details as I waited in line for the person whose reaction I was most anxiously waiting to see. As a 5th grader, my first instinct was to alert my mom right away, which is exactly what I did as soon as I got in the passenger seat of the all black sedan.…
