There are numerous elements that factor into the term ‘cultural competence’, and it is important to understand each one in order to establish cultural competency. Firstly, individuals should be confident and knowledgeable in their own cultural backgrounds, and understand/ implement their values, beliefs, and traditions. The statement “Culture is the fundamental building block of identity” supports this concept (AGDEEWR, 2010).Secondly, individuals should be respectful of other cultures, values, beliefs and traditions. Cultural competence is achieved when racism, inequality, stereotypes, and judgements are eliminated. This should not be limited to ethnicity, but also include gender, religions, age, and physical and mental abilities. Active participation
