Elementary Field Observation Report

For my first field experience, I decided to visit and observe a 4th grade classroom. Since I am a volunteer at my daughter’s school I visited Mark Twain elementary. I am not an ECED major and have never really been to a classroom except for meet the teacher days or class parties. Even when I did attend this events I never payed much attention to my surroundings. As a result, I had no clue what to expect or exactly what to look for.
The first thing I observed when entering the classroom was the classroom atmosphere. The room looked fun and inviting. I immediately noticed lots of wall art, bright colors, and even different learning stations. Since I was observing a classroom that contained young children I decided to look at safety first. The tables and chairs were strategically placed not to block any windows or exits. Each desk was neatly organized into individual rows. The chairs each had four tennis balls cut open and

While the snack in class was an awesome idea I had concerns about safety. Many children have allergies and this could be dangerous. I wanted to know the school’s policy on snacks and brining outside food on campus. I was also curious about the BYOD policy and how and when students could use their devices. I figured out I could get this information from the Alvin ISD website and student handbook.
The information I gathered from this experience can be incredibly useful in so many ways. By taking the time to look at a normal everyday classroom more closely I was able to see safety concerns I may not have noticed otherwise. Students can learn about safety by allowing them to look around the room and point out things they think are unsafe. Looking at something from a different level or different perspective can really open your eyes! I loved the way this teacher could be consistent with her routines. It was clear to see that her consistency made the day go by much

When I walk into Ms. Keller’s classroom, I feel like a giant. Everything is smaller from, the chairs to tables, and even the smartboard is lower. I forgot how small kindergartners really are. There are four tables in the middle of the room, and one next to the wall. The room is filled with color and posters about the ABC’s, counting, and pay attention during class.…

Since the start of my field site rotation, I have been doing my field site experience with the United States Army Public Health Clinic here on the island of Oahu. As I have noted before, this clinic is unique in that the population that it serves are military service members and military retirees, their families, and the Department of the Army civilian employees. Two-way communication is evident in this organization, and thus should be in all organizations for success to be accomplished.…

What I was first able to observe during my visit to “La Casa” which is considered a head start program in Chicago, is the fact that it resembles a business. With its blue and pink-ish kind of beige looking letters fading on its store front, we can see that it has been here for quite some time. Entering the building gave me that old feeling of nostalgia of when I was attending grammar school, although technically this facility isn’t a grammar school. After speaking with the main desk and getting squared away, I was placed in Mrs. Garcia’s preschool classroom. In her classroom, Mrs. Garcia had a helper, Ms. Gamboa.…

I attended the University of Hartford from August of 2015 through July of 2016. I took a medical leave of absence because I was struggling emotionally and needed to attend treatment. I attended Silver Hill in July of 2016 through August of 2016. I then transitioned to an IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) in New York City from August 2016 to January 2017. As part of my treatment and in order to develop long-term sustainable skills, I then attended a residential young adult treatment program in North Carolina called Cooper Riis.…

Eating a meal and attending a class are equally important. One cannot be successful with just doing only one of these two actions. Eating give you energy for class, while attending class will give you knowledge to support yourself in the future. Thus, I decide to pick the Social Science and Humanities Building, or commonly known as SOCSCI by students, and the Tercero Dining Commons, or DC, to compare. It is true that SOCSCI and the Tercero DC are convenient locations, but there is more to these two places when I force myself to sit down and notice the details within both areas.…

Fieldwork Excursion #2 Activity #1: Impression Management in Action The first situation I chose to observe myself in was at a volleyball practice, and the second situation I chose to observe myself in was in physics class. At volleyball practice the type of “front” I encounter is an athletic front for I am a starting middle blocker on a college volleyball team. The type of “front” I encounter in physics class is an academic front for this class is in my major. The settings of each definitely play a role in my presentation of self for example volleyball practice is in the gym therefore I wear workout clothes.…

In my own field research (see appendix A), I observed that most of my peers, myself included are multitaskers. If you walk into any student space; the cafes, the library, in the common and even walking up and down the streets, it isn’t uncommon to see most students my age doing many tasks at a time. We are walking and checking our phones, posting pictures, sending messages and checking our email. If you take a look at our computer screens, we will probably have multiple tabs open because we aren’t done looking at one site when we quickly hop on the next because something caught our attention. In my first field observation, I noted that nearly everyone I observed was doing at least two or more activities simultaneously.…

I have learned so much from my fieldwork observations. I have been able to see a second grade and pre-k class and see the difference between curriculums and schedules. Something that has surprised me while observing was noticing how some parents do not help their children with homework assignments which is unfortunate. To add, I learned approaches that the cooperating teacher made for students that did not complete work, assignments, or misbehaved in class. Hearing the students’ excitement when I show up to fieldwork and hear some of the student responses to questions are two of the things that I love most while observing.…

My observation hours were spent in a kindergarten classroom at McFall Elementary in Middleville, my home town. I observed Mrs. Young’s class of twenty-five students. I enjoyed observing in this classroom since it was my former teacher and classroom when I was in kindergarten as well. While observing, I could see many different subjects being taught, and multiple ways in which they were taught. Also, it was interesting to notice the reactions the kids gave towards a certain teaching style or towards a specific activity.…

Each time a student ran a lesson the students were quiet perhaps because they were busy doing something else, but they did not interrupt and even when a students made a mistake they all gave support to the students saying you got this. The class always clapped after the lesson and many even said thank you to the Student Teacher for the day or good job. The environment is supportive and strong in the classroom. Learning opportunities for students should be diverse, rigorous, inclusive and equitable across the board. Teachers must work to create classrooms that support student learning, management and growth socially, emotionally and educationally.…

My practicum situation is different from a typical general-education classroom, therefore my cooperating teacher, Mr. Callahan, had to provide special explanation and instruction about his fifth grade self contained classroom. He told me that his fifth graders are academically at a second grade level. As for my role in his classroom, he explained to me that I should expect to be put to work over the next few weeks of practicum. This included working individually with his eight students, as well as delivering a lesson by the end of this experience, which made me nervous but also excited.…

The teacher took special care in dividing the class into small groups for the activities; every group had at least one high level student or a technically skilled student, so that the groups could complete the task at a given time. I observed that this encouraged active learning. Physical attributes of the classroom such as the layout and climate also contribute to an effective lesson to happen.…
