Early School Classroom Observation

On March 23rd and 24th, I set out to Adel, Iowa to observe two classrooms. One was a 2nd grade classroom and the other was an 8th grade classroom. I live in Winterset, Iowa, so it was a really easy journey to Adel. I observed the 2nd grade first, and my experience was a really great one. The materials and things used in the classroom is very different from what you may think. Mrs. Nielsen, the 2nd grade teacher, used the white board as a central tool for the children. They had their tasks on the board and it was place for the students to learn better and more efficiently. Also, books and small spelling cards were used during reading and spelling time, and most of the students felt comfortable with reading me some of their favorite books. I also helped with time counting, and I used an example clock, put the time on there, and had the students tell me the time. That leads me into the next part and question perfectly. Some classrooms do not have smooth transitions between grades, but when observing this class, it did. Mrs. Nielsen definitely knew exactly how to incorporate reading and writing skills together and made sure everyone was on the same page before moving on. She left math until the end of the day, where students can get help from her in a small group and be able to have questions answered. As far as I can tell, there are not …show more content…
It has taught me that I need to work on my patience, and that no one is perfect at all. It is almost impossible to be perfect, especially in this profession. Being perfect isn’t the main focus, but more of helping students learn and succeed in everything they do. If there are mistakes along the way, so be it. But you have to be open to those mistakes and admit to them as well. Because you just might find something that you love behind the mistakes

Based on my observation, I believe Mrs. Laura was the expertise and Mrs. Jan was the novice. Mrs. Laura was able to think in a larger, more meaningful pattern. When it came to teaching reading, Mrs. Laura was able to take the book and create different activities for the children to learn. She made it fun for the children to learn. When she created the different activities, she was able to target different goals such as spelling.…

On 01/24/2018, I observed one of an Early Head Start classroom at Kidango, Eden Palms. At 9:30 AM there were four children and one teacher inside of the classroom. Introduction: How Children Succed p.xiii&xv In this introduction I was surprised on how they are having three year olds filling out worksheets and completing drills on letter and number recognition (Tough, 2013, p.xiii). I did notice when my son went to transitional kindergarten that what was expected from him was what a kindergarten back then would be learning. When he went to kindergarten he was expected to know more than what I remember was required before.…

Next, I was at the first-grade door waiting for Mrs. Hengesbach's class to return from specials. When they arrived, I received a wonderful warm welcome for the whole class who was expecting my arrival. I took a seat in the back of the classroom and the students gathered on a carpet in the front of the room. Mrs. Hengesbach read and sang a story, the topic became clear soon, they were studying poetry. The students were told to go back to their seats to write whether the book was poetry like the day before, or it was not and explain why.…

All teachers performed great jobs at creating a unified classroom of learners. The students have favorable moments to act as chiefs and helpmates with individual responsibilities; their jobs are placed in a pocket folder on the wall. Students could participate in classroom activities in a variety of ways. Ms. Atkinson, Bell, Waldoky, and Gullekerson used a rocking chair during their teachable moments. I noticed around the classrooms, the teachers modeled supportive interactions with the students, and encouraged prosocial behavior.…

Reading over SIOP feature 22 reminded me about my experiences coming to the U.S. As students in Saudi Arabia we only learn some English. The English we learn we do not really practice because we use our native language. I have learned that one of the best ways to learn English is to move to a country where the main language is English. This is a better way to learn a language because it is more natural.…

Spending two and half hours in each classroom, I learned a great deal about early childhood education from ages birth through eight, and the effort and skills that it takes to create a stimulating learning environment. For my infant, toddler, and preschool observations, I spent my hours at the CCC Childcare Center located in our college while for my kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade observations, I spent my time at Casey Park Elementary School. During my observations at the CCC Childcare Center, I learned plenty about the methods and practices that go into early education before primary grades. The preschool classroom really stood out to me because the centers in the classroom were very open ended and filled with lots of manipulative for…

I believe that all learning stems from relationships. Students, myself included, respond best when they feel valued and appreciated by their teacher/professor. I think this is especially true when we talk about literature and writing in the classroom. In an article by Beth Morrow, she presents the notion that, “the strength of our student relationships makes the difference in translating our passion for teaching into their passion for learning” (Morrow). I could not agree with this statement more.…

Although I have not been able to attend Lafayette Academy much, I have observed a magnificent teacher. Ms. Robinson teaches 1st grade an engages each child in every one of her lessons. She takes the time to work with each student and seems to have a good relationship with each child’s families. For example, if one student is off task and not completing the lesson she encourages them by saying “If I should that to your mom would she be happy?” She engages the students with her tone of voice sometimes even singing in the classroom.…

My practicum situation is different from a typical general-education classroom, therefore my cooperating teacher, Mr. Callahan, had to provide special explanation and instruction about his fifth grade self contained classroom. He told me that his fifth graders are academically at a second grade level. As for my role in his classroom, he explained to me that I should expect to be put to work over the next few weeks of practicum. This included working individually with his eight students, as well as delivering a lesson by the end of this experience, which made me nervous but also excited.…

SEP #4 In my observation of a Kindergarten class, there were many different teaching methods used. Over the computers a poster of shapes was hung and the students used it as a reference of how to spell the shapes names. Surprisingly, there was a poster of the president informing the students of who the current president was. On the door was a list of classroom rules telling the students to share, be kind, and to keep their hands to themselves. The students have their own mailboxes and cost cubbies on the far wall near the toys. This helps keep the clutter down to a minimum.…

Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
