Early School Classroom Observation

On March 23rd and 24th, I set out to Adel, Iowa to observe two classrooms. One was a 2nd grade classroom and the other was an 8th grade classroom. I live in Winterset, Iowa, so it was a really easy journey to Adel. I observed the 2nd grade first, and my experience was a really great one. The materials and things used in the classroom is very different from what you may think. Mrs. Nielsen, the 2nd grade teacher, used the white board as a central tool for the children. They had their tasks on the board and it was place for the students to learn better and more efficiently. Also, books and small spelling cards were used during reading and spelling time, and most of the students felt comfortable with reading me some of their favorite books. I also helped with time counting, and I used an example clock, put the time on there, and had the students tell me the time. That leads me into the next part and question perfectly. Some classrooms do not have smooth transitions between grades, but when observing this class, it did. Mrs. Nielsen definitely knew exactly how to incorporate reading and writing skills together and made sure everyone was on the same page before moving on. It has taught me that I need to work on my patience, and that no one is perfect at all. It is almost impossible to be perfect, especially in this profession. Being perfect isn’t the main focus, but more of helping students learn and succeed in everything they do. If there are mistakes along the way, so be it. But you have to be open to those mistakes and admit to them as well. Because you just might find something that you love behind the mistakes
