It also offers “care at a distance” which means any organization in the Epic community are able to use telehealth. “Telehealth allows a physician to examine and treat a patient without either party traveling” (Sayles, 2013). With telehealth, doctors use telephones and videos to care for a patient who is at home or across the world. The weakness of this system is cost; it is expensive to implement an EMR and it does not let an organization use other systems. The system allows sharing, but they charge a fee for every data or charts shared, “Epic EMR systems do not allow users to share data in a way that will satisfy Meaningful Use requirements, since the software charges a fee to send data to some non-Epic systems” (Theme, n.d). Something I found interesting is how a company like Epic could be started in the basement with one and a half employees and is now the top rated vendor in America. Epic is task oriented and has many functions to benefit a facility’s needs. The medical team uses the health systems to document patient care and provide the best possible care for the patients. The strengths of the system would be having telehealth so physicians are able to care for patients outside the hospital. They are also able to exchange records even if it is for a fee. Since Epic is a private company, a challenge to the system includes having to pay a fee for every charts and data shared with other facilities who do not use Epic as their main system. An opportunity for improvement could be allowing organizations to share charts or data, no matter which system they use and not having to pay the fee.
