Nursing informatics is a growing field that involves technology to improve and advance the quality of care for patients. It includes a synthesis of information encompassing concepts of computer science and nursing science (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). Nursing research has enhanced within and across healthcare system to improve health and lower cost of care (Park, Pruinelli, Westra, & Delaney, 2014). It has allowed hospital staff to engage in training with new experiences and education for healthcare service (Moerbe & Kelemen 2014). The electronic health record has allowed staff to manage health care information and have it patient centered. It has allowed nursing staff to improve access and enable providers to make decisions to support decisions for patients (Murphy, 2010). Communication has also improved among different providers including nurses, physicians, and pharmacist (Gephart, Carrington, & Finley, 2015). Each discipline can view order sets through electronic health record and make a critical judgment if it 's appropriate for a patients condition. It has allowed nurses to become organized in planning and helped nurses with process reorganization skills to improve the health care delivery systems (Murphy, 2010). It has improved safety, efficient care, and reduced disparities. It can engage patients and family members to be involved in their care (Murphy, 2010). Patients can have records for themselves from the electronic health record to follow up and improve his or her results for the next check up. It has also improved care coordination with healthcare staff and patients (Murphy, 2010). Another pro to electronic health records is that it allows a nurse to access the electronic health record to help facilitate report for a patient who is transferring units.
