Electronic Cigarettes Case Study

Q1: I am comparing the safety of electronic cigarettes with smoking cigarettes. According to the FDA, there are over 90 toxic chemicals in tobacco smoking as compared to at least 3 toxic chemicals in e-cigarettes. They produce the same cancer-causing ingredients, but it happens more in tobacco. Tobacco smoking produces secondhand smoke while e-cigarettes produce vapor, which according to researchers, it doesn’t pose a risk for bystanders. Tobacco short and long term use can have adverse effects on people and others involved such as reoccurring bronchitis and cancer. There isn’t enough information on e-cigarettes, but from what I have read, it seems safer. When I was a child, my parents constantly smoked everywhere, which had negative …show more content…
According to medshadow.org, two factors are influencing teenagers into vaping such as the different flavors that they would like and no restrictions when buying vapes or e-cigs online or in some states. There should use the same rules and regulations, but just make some changes. Commercials shouldn’t happen during children’s shows or a channel that is for the young audience. A person should only be able to get the different flavors if he or she is over the age of 18. “Vaping and Health: What Do We Know about E-Cigarettes?” states that “In contrast to tobacco products, e-cigarette sales are not age-restricted, and in 2012 an estimated 1.78 million students in grades 6–12 had tried the devices.” In addition, children at these ages cannot make rational decisions and if a decision is made, it could be influenced by peer pressure. Until research studies of long term effects are done, no one under the age of 18 should be able to buy these products. Vardavas and others did a research study on the effects that an electronic cigarette could produce on the respiratory system. The results concluded that people who inhale these chemicals could have drastic effects on airways resistance and nitric oxide levels. According to “Safety evaluation and risk assessment of electronic cigarettes,” a study was concluded which states, “Researchers evaluated the acute effects of EC use on coronary flow. In particular, they measured the flow velocity reserve of the left anterior descending coronary artery by echocardiography after intravenous infusion of adenosine, representing the maximal ability of the artery to deliver blood to the myocardium.” As I stated in the first question, there isn’t much information to determine anything involving e-cigarettes. Since I was unsure what facts to use, I used a

It's difficult to decide if they are safer than cigarettes if one doesn't have enough information to compare the two. Out of the 42 identified chemicals, there are certain ones that are especially harmful such as acetaldehyde, acetone, cadmium, lead, and nicotine (Harmful Chemicals in Electronic Cigarettes). E-cigarettes are a controversial public health concern that is on both sides of the health spectrum; they are viewed as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, but poses similar health risks. The 2014 article Why e-cigarettes should be banned from minors by Gary A. Emmett supports the belief that e-cigarettes have negative effects on health and should be inaccessible for minors. Although e-cigarettes are publicized as a safer and less addictive alternative to smoking, e-cigarettes are also argued to cause liquid poisoning and contain the addictive stimulant nicotine, and Emmett presents evidence to persuade the audience to control this product. Emmett’s article from the Philly news website was chosen for its representativeness principle, reflecting on his rhetorical output.…

This result won’t be concluded until the problems start to affect people. This is tragic because the younger generation using this product is increasing. Given an estimate of about ten years the production of electronic-cigarettes will surpass tobacco products (Price,…

This causes all the positives compared to traditional cigarettes. Jed E Rose, the researcher in nication, said, “Yes they appear to be effective and safer”. When smoking cigarettes there are carcinogens released and inhaled into the lungs that are not exhaled. Electronic cigarettes do not have any problems like this, John Britton, director of the U.K. Center for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies at the University of Nottingham said, “research lays to rest almost all of the concerns over these products, and concludes that, with sensible regulation, electronic cigarettes have the potential to make a major contribution towards preventing the premature death, disease and social inequalities in health that smoking currently causes in the U.K”. This shows that a country that has just as many smokers as the U.S has dedicated to their faith into electronic cigarettes.…

People are beginning to find out that there is a better, safer, and much cheaper alternative to smoking. That alternative is an Electronic Cigarette, which was first invented by a man by the name of Hon. The first “vaporizer” consisted of 3 simple parts: a lithium-ion battery, a small cartridge filled with the “e-juice”, and an atomizer, which is used to create heat, causing the juice to “vaporize”, making it ready to inhale. Cigarettes are made by growing tobacco, E-cigarettes contain far less chemicals than original cigarettes do.…
