Electronic Cigarettes have stormed the market flooding, smoke shops with all different types of e-cigarette devices and refilling liquids; subsequently, it has grown into a $3.5 billion industry. Unlike tobacco products containing nicotine, e-cigarettes are not regulated by the FDA. Due to the lack of suitable guidelines, this industry has been allowed free reign to sell, package, and manufacture these products as the companies see fit. These insufficient standards have become apparent in the incline of middle school and high school smokers, the poisoning of young children and physical damage due to exploding e-cigarettes.
E-cigarettes are not only popular among current smokers as an alternative to smoking tobacco products but has attracted a new generation of smokers. Unfortunately, the new smoking generation consists of middle school and high school students. Smoking of e-cigarette devices is called “Vaping” by the younger generation and has caught on like wildfire. Vaping distributors are marketing towards this demographic through e-cigarette designs, and refill liquid flavoring. Having the option to customize their vaping device by choosing from their favorite color or character and selecting flavors like skittles or fruit loops which sound safe and delicious, vaping has thrived in this demographic. It is too early to say what other health concerns will show up in 10 to 20 years from now. However, in the short time, it has been on the market; it has proved to be a very toxic, addictive, and potentially damaging product. It is essential that the FDA sets strict regulations governing the selling, packaging, and manufacturing of e-cigarettes. Without strict government regulations in place, there will continue to be a rise in adolescent smokers, nicotine poisoning, and injuries due to e-cigarette
