Imagine this scenario: a group of friend introduces an electronic cigarette to a teenage boy. At first, he uses it to fit in because it makes him feels cool. Then the adolescent continues to use them regularly because he slowly becomes addicted to the nicotine. When he finally turns 18, he switches from electronic cigarettes to traditional cigarettes. Would this have happened if he never tried the electronic cigarette in the first place? Unfortunately, this similar fate became a reality for many people because 76.8% of people who use electronic cigarettes also smoke traditional cigarettes (“E-Cigarette and Lung”). This statistic shows the correlation between the two cigarettes. Smoking then leads to complications that cost nearly $300 billion in medical costs every year …show more content…
An electronic cigarette is a battery-operated product that heats liquid filled with nicotine and other chemicals, and then turns nicotine into vapor inhaled by the user (Goodale; Khan A.10). The regular users become known as “vapers” (Siegel A.13). In addition, electronic cigarettes may sometimes be referred to as e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookahs, and e-cigars, but are also know as electronic nicotine delivery systems, otherwise called ENDS (“E-Cigarettes and Lung”). The original shape looked like a regular cigarette, but in recent years, transformed to resemble pipes or pens (Yoneyama). Furthermore, the e-liquid found inside of the device comes from tobacco mixed with flavor, coloring, and chemicals (“E-Cigarette and Lung”). However, electronic cigarettes puff the nicotine without actually burning the tobacco, unlike a traditional cigarette (Friedman). Sometimes they act as a new alternative because they contain no tobacco, but they still deliver nicotine to the body, giving them similar addictive assets as traditional cigarettes. Sometimes this aspect may fool consumers because they think this product appear as automatically healthier than traditional
