And
Ineffective Treatment

Mental institution, unfortunately, during the 13th century, when the first institution was built, diagnoses were inaccurate. “In 1818, a man is known as Lawrence, or worse: 14956, was sentenced to the biggest facility of its time, Willard Home, just for singing and praying loudly while at work, he was a window washer” (Penney, 2009, p.64). I could imagine this situation to be a misdiagnosis; as I read further along in the book, Lawrence repeatedly denied accusations of a mental disorder, …show more content…
From electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), insulin shock therapy and frontal lobotomy. Because these treatments made a “noticeable effect” on patients, it was supposed to be a good option. Electroconvulsive therapy is also known as electric shock, where seizures are electrically induced in anesthetized patients for therapeutic effect based on the definitions in the historical dictionary by Shorter, (2005, p.78). These induced seizures make the situation worse than the start of the patient’s road to recovery. This form of treatment, ECT, is used mainly for patient’s that have major depression issues, while depression can be cured through healing and seizures maintained through medicine. I feel that depression is caused by situations in life, such as death and birth and marriage and the loss of a job or loss of a loved one, there are many reasons why a person can fall into depression. Just as someone could fall into depression, I fell, they can crawl out of depression. Through the environment, such as a sunny day or “getting out of the house” and family, spousal and children support are helpful ways to crutch someone through a stage of depression. It consists of cutting the connections to and from, or simply destroying the prefrontal cortex. These procedures often result in major personality changes and possible mental disabilities. Lobotomies were used in the past to treat a wide range of severe mental illness, or what was claimed to be severe, including teenage behavior, moodiness, schizophrenia and various anxiety disorders. This psychosurgery was performed using various forms and methods. A Portuguese neurologist won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1949. His work included and was mainly lobotomies. He pioneered the prefrontal lobotomy. The procedure involved drilling holes in the patients head and destroying tissue in the frontal lobes and then injecting alcohol into the drilled holes. Another method used to perform lobotomies was with the use of an ice pick and a hammer. Lobotomies are so inhumane, a neurologist used electroconvulsive therapy to render the patient unconscious before performing the lobotomy!
Rosemary Kennedy, the sister of President John F. Kennedy, received a lobotomy when her father told the doctors that she was too “moody”. After the surgery, she was reduced to an infantile state and she had incontinence, she was 23 years
