b. Background.
Mr. Ortiz states that Electric Boat was responsible for developing and building the Navy’s first submarines. Electric Boat was established and founded by John Hopkins in 1899. With an average workforce 13,000, the main operations are in Groton, CT and Quonset Point Rhode Island. It first started building diesel submarines in early 1900’s and in 1951 built the world famous “USS Nautilus” which was the first nuclear powered submarine to sail across the north pole, this enable the submarine to operate for unlimited distances without having to refuel.

Organizational Goals.
According to their website, the organizational goals are to improve business through the continuous process improvement. They are committed to improving product cost, scheduling and quality and safety performance. This organization utilizes the Lean Six Sigma program to training their employees and to challenge highly trained people to solve the most complex problems. The Lean Six Sigma training is offered to all employees. They are committed to engaging their employees, suppliers and customers to improve processes and daily operations.

IV. Facilities.
According to the website, Electric Boats’ Groton facility occupies 118 acres along the Thames River that receives different modules of a submarine and puts them all together into one completed submarine. The facility also has dry docks that support the maintenance and over haul of submarines.

V. Equipment.

Electric Boat uses the total quality management linkage to help increase the knowledge and skills of their employees. They utilize the Lean Sig Sigma which focuses on the quality of work, the efficiency of the team, and the improvement process. According to their website, this helps the company maximize the talent of their workforce and improve the quality of their product. When designing and developing complex systems such as a submarine, it is important to be efficient to prevent wasted time and effort and re-work. This is both beneficial to the employees and the customers. This will lead to more opportunities for Electric Boat to hire within the company
