Elective Practicum Essay

My second elective practicum is at Novata Cares assessing children for Autism and other neurological problems. I was testing this 6-year-old child using the WISC-IV. There was a question that asked him, “What is courage,” for which he replied “that’s being brave like me I’m a boy.” His answer did not shock me as I would have expected. It is a common thing for us (society) to tell boys to be brave or not to cry because that’s a girl thing. This 6-year-old child has already learned that courage means being a boy, which means being afraid is a girl thing. Once again we are reiterating to men that they need to be brave, courageous, strong, and smart. We are all humans therefore, we are bound to get scared regardless of gender. I’m wondering what

Our society has built up these gender stereotypes stating men are big, strong, superior (to women) and aren’t allowed to show compassion while women are these petite, soft-spoken emotional disasters. The current children of this generation, i feel have it the easiest when it comes to dealing with the gender notion. Everything aside, they are still faced with gender normalities. Only a few decades ago our nation used the term “stay at home mom”,but you would never hear anyone say “stay at home dad” because our culture believed that the men had the jobs and made the money while the women would clean and take care of the children. Many Disney characters had been accommodated into this stereotype in order fit the current culture that we have become…

Should schools have balanced schedule or all year round schooling? No, there are many disadvantages to having a balanced calendar. Some of these reasons are it still takes about the same amount of time throughout the year to reteach information forgotten from breaks, it is hard to find a babysitter for short intervals of time rather than a big block of time with a high school student wanting a job, and lastly students having a summer job is almost completely eliminated. The number one reason for school turning away from the balanced schedule is because the main reason they went to them is to reduce the learning curve (summer slide), where student forgot information over their 12 week break.…

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition where remarkable gender differences have been observed in the recent past. With that said, there has been few longitudinal studies that investigate gender/sex differences in individuals with ASD, and there is still much to learn about how and why ASD affects it affects the genders differently (May, 20__, p.1078). Perhaps the most important issue that arises when ASD is investigated through a gendered lens is that of the vast disparity in the diagnosis of ASD between boys and girls. As Harrop et al. (2014, p.766) note, there is a 4 to 1 average “male dominance” in the diagnoses of ASD in children, Harrop further notes that this ratio can rise to as high 8 to 1 when particular types of autism are being diagnosed.…

The traditional school year has been in practice for decades and in this time, has shown that it is greatly successful. To switch to year-round schooling would overall be incredibly inconvenient for each person involved. The traditional school year should remain in Niagara because in comparison to year-round schooling it is less expensive, more convenient for parents, and offers more opportunities for students. Funding for education is expensive enough as is, and possibly making the school year longer could alter these costs. To fund education all school staff must be paid, which includes teachers, secretaries, and janitors.…

Although there are several methods to conduct research studies, there is one in particular that interests me most. This method of research is called the exploratory research study. This type of research is typically conducted for a problem that has not yet been clearly defined or resolved. Exploratory research is not usually generalized to a population of people, but to a select few or small group that is affected by the issue at hand. One study that has not only captivated my attention because of the rising number of people that are affected, but has also been an on-going battle in my personal life is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Abuse (PTSD).…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
