At some point in a person’s life, they grow old. It happens to everyone. The way seniors are treated around the world varies greatly, depending on where they live. Some elders are honored and celebrated, like in Korea. Whereas, in the United states, when a person becomes old, they are expected to go to a nursing home, where they will be cared for. In The Giver, elders live at The House of the Old, but are not cared for by their family. They are cared for by the people that work there, and by volunteers. The articles “7 Cultures That Celebrate Aging And Respect Their Elders” and “How the elderly are treated around the world” show how the elderly are treated and respected in different places around the world. Some cultures honor and respect their elders, as they do in The Giver, but some cultures feel seniors weigh down on families and on the society.
