The prison population is ageing. People over 60 are the fastest growing age group in prisons (American Civil Liberties Union). Experts say that the growth of the elderly incarcerated will continue to grow. Having elderly people incarcerated is costly in 2012 Human Rights watch, estimated that it is nine times more expensive to have an old person in custody rather than a typical prisoner. He has arthritis, and has had cataract surgery three times. He just received a wheelchair to help him get around. Earl might seem like an ordinary elderly man in America. But while many of his friends reside in Nursing homes and other assisted living facilities, Earl will call Wisconsin’s Oshkosh Correctional Institution home, for the rest of his life. Earl represents a growing number of elderly inmates in state prisons across the country. As the prisoner starts aging he/she starts to get older he/she starts having more special needs due to their health, missing their loved ones, and feeling lonely and vulnerable. So even though they once were adjusted to living the prison life, they start getting unadjusted which causes the elderly prisoner to get unhealthy and mentally age quicker. However for some elderly prisoners general prison population can be a treat. They might have a hard time establishing social relationships with younger inmates. In conclusion, due to all this information I strongly believe elderly prisoners should be granted the chance to be freed from prison for the good of the government. Because if they are granted the chance to leave the government will be saving a lot of money, since it does cost more to have an elderly in prison other than a young prisoner, due to their health
