Elderly Drivers Persuasive Essay

Good afternoon everyone, today I thought we could start with a quick survey. Could I get you to raise your hand is you have a grandparent over the age of 70, who still has a drivers license please? If we look around, this number may not seem like many but this is only a small representation on the larger population. The fact of the matter is that many elderly people still drive on our roads. For this reason, we should be making ’S’ plates compulsory for drivers over the age of 70. This would strengthen the elderly’s safety as well as other drivers or pedestrians. Displaying S plates should not make the drivers ashamed but instil in them a sense of pride instead. As many would say, ‘getting old is not for the weak’ and this just proves that only the tough can stick it out and drive into their 70’s and 80’s. A spokesperson from QBE said “It’s to offer them greater options to retain mobility”, as quoted in John Carney’s article published online for ‘Daily Mail Australia’. In the article, Carney states that as well as S plates, a box would be installed in drivers cars that would record information and there would therefore no longer be a need for medical or driving tests. This takes away the hassle and stress for drivers and will enable them to be monitored over a period of time. A QBE worker, Frank Peppard even went as far as to tell Carney that it “will save lives”. QBE are one of the biggest insurance companies in Australia, therefore, they know all the facts and figures when it comes to pensioners and driving. Upon further investigation, a different spokesman from the company has been quoted as saying “we are not taking their licenses away”, therefore elderly drivers should be proud of their personal achievement and they should not be thinking of these plates as an embarrassment or an
