In an attempt to uncover how an older adult feels about the aging process and what it means to become older, I interviewed Ram Prasad Dahal, who lives at Edgewater Neighborhood, Chicago. I met my interviewee at my co-worker’s apartment located at 5841 N. Winthrop Ave. on Saturday, Nov 7th around 4 PM. It was a windy and chilly day with temperature about 50 degrees, but the room, where we had the conversation was warm when I got in there. Mr. Dahal is the youngest of four brothers and two sisters, who all grew up in a small town in Nepal, Bharatpur. I learned that he came to the US five years ago having lived in Nepal since childhood. So I decided to find out his life experience both in the US and Nepal. I thought it would be interesting to …show more content…
Dahal was his thoughts about the aging process. He answered that aging is a natural process set by god, and he is not scared of death and wants to live happily for the remaining days. He wants to live as long as he can walk, stay in his home, eat what he wants, sleep peacefully, and enjoy with friends. Although he believes that aging results in physical weakness and more health related problems, he feels that his spiritual knowledge has expanded and provided him a chance to see human life differently. He mentioned that “having quality time with grandchildren and being with loved ones make me forget the physical pain in my knees.” He also added that one thing he liked about being old is the respect he receives from family members as well as the opportunity to learn more about human …show more content…

His lack of knowledge about health care services made me aware that older population should be informed about the available resources for them in the community. There are several organizations working towards improving quality of life of elderly and providing behavioral health as well as recreational services. As a future health care professional, I am encouraged to contribute my knowledge to make our society a better place for

Discussing adults aged 65+, it discussed the growing average life expectancy, challenges that seniors face, and dying. The life expectancy is becoming longer and longer due to medical advances, but the effects of aging are inevitable. A decline in sensory and motor abilities, bone density, muscle mass, skin elasticity, senses become less acute. In short, as our bodies age they decay and lose abilities and properties they once had. Some of the challenges senior citizens face are the risk of Alzheimer (a disease that causes the death of brain tissue), losing their sense of meaning, sexual/arousal issues, and depression, just to name a few.…

Although I entered this program planning to work as an FNP, experiences during the pre-specialty year have confirmed my passion for the adult patient. Specifically, I hope to serve rural communities as a primary care provider, focusing my practice on the management of chronic disease in older adults. My passion for older adults is rooted in the experiences I had throughout the summers of my undergraduate career. Learning about successful aging in this chapter gives me a reason to feel more optimistic about aging because, in the book, it states that “everyone wants to age “successful,” although we may differ in how we define successful aging. To some, this may mean maintaining good health and being free of diseases that might limit physical and mental skills and the ability to actively participate in desired daily activities (Rowe & Kahn,1998). As a person who believes in the saying of this quote. I never thought about successful aging to be more than just that. Until Kristen Lowry, her colleague, and David Snowdon talked about their ideas and research.…

Emanuel pointed to how the last years of our lives are not of “high quality”. In reality, all that the health care has done is make us live longer, not make us age slower. This has led to people living into their eighties and ninety’s and taking the resources that are needed for the more productive younger generation. He stated he believed by the age of seventy-five we can transfer to our children and grandchildren the wisdom we have and implant in their minds good wholesome memories. He asserted how we want our children to remember us by the prime days that we spent together rather than the decrepit elderly person sitting in the nursing…

I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
