I completely agree with you. I also felt the greatest challenge I will face will being able to receive sufficient funding. I found it interesting how you have witnessed policies, regarding funding, change without your knowledge. I'm sure it happens more often than we are aware of. In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

The authors of “Help me! I’m Old!” came up with the conclusion that caregivers can also lead to a decrease in self-esteem for older adults. Because of the negative stereotypes that are associated with older adults, a caregiver may believe that they know what is best for the elders’ needs and discredit or ignore their requests. If an elder communicates a need, such as being hungry or having a headache, and their caregiver neglects their need or delays treatment, the elder will eventually give up communicating with their caregiver.…

After spending the first month of my summer playing video games, eating junk food, and binging Netflix shows, I wanted to do something fun while also helping the community. Brainstorming ideas, my mom recommended volunteering at a senior center. While I was not interested at first, I wanted to try new experiences as much as I possibly could. The next day, we went to the Forsyth Senior Center and an old gentleman greeted us with extreme kindness. Asking about any volunteer opportunities at the center, I imagined helping with bingo.…

What struck me about this week’s readings was the relationship between ethnographic voices via locale (in all its various meanings) and positionality. I am glad these were specifically ordered, as Linda Alcoff’s questions – who should be speaking for whom? Are ethnographers always the best interpreters? Should the insider authority of the subaltern always be assumed? What kind of violence is being done through this kind of professional/privileged ethnographic interpretation?…

Alexxis, After reading this summary, I think listening to this podcast would really benefit me! My grandmother that moved in with us about six months ago has Alzheimer's Disease. It's really challenging for her to keep up with her medications and we've found that recently she looks for every excuse to avoid going to the doctor even when she clearly knows she needs to. I think a big component of that is the fact that she recognizes she has trouble remembering things and it must be really discouraging for her. I think the point you made about having them write down main questions that need to be addressed would help her feel like she has some control and ensure she gets the answers she needs.…

For the past five years I have worked with adults with learning disability supporting them to leave independently in their homes and to access their local communities in some cases using my car to do so. For example I work with this elderly gentleman who leaves on his own but needs support with personal care and general house chores. As part of a team, I have supported this gentleman to shower and dress in the morning and evenings making sure that he takes his medication. Also I support him at teatime to prepare meals, with much emphasis on a healthy diet, which helps his health conditions. Moreover, I work closely with the dietician and the learning disability nurse; this enables me to give a coordinated support which is guided by his care…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full.…
