It is estimated that more than half a million older people are experiencing some form of abuse, but the true extent is not known and this is likely an underestimate (HCHC). Abuse of vulnerable older people can be defined as ‘a violation of an individual’s human and civil rights’ and it can take place in any content. (DH) As people start to get older, they slowly lose their ability to move or fight back; they become frail and weak. This makes them vulnerable to abuse. Most cases happen in a family setting where the abuser is an older child, grandchild, or a spouse. When one suspects elder abuse, it is encouraged to report it. To go about reporting one could talk to the abuser’s boss, call law enforcement, call Adult Protection Services, or call elder abuse hotline. Manage the elderly person’s medication and check it daily. Be sure to spend as much time with them as you can to keep an eye out for any abuse that could possibly happen. Most importantly hire someone that the family trust to take care of their loved one, it is very important to be comfortable with who is watching the loved one. There is adequate amount of factual statistics and information to show that the everlasting issue of elder abuse is on the rise today. This is a problem in which society should have more concern for. That everyone undoubtedly will be of the elderly age group someday. It is upon that consensus that society will mutually agree that elder abuse is an issue that they would not want to fall victims of this type of vulnerable abuse or any type of abuse.
