Elder Abuse And The Media

Improved Essays
In 2015 the media has a large impact on how we see certain groups of people and certain issues. It has the ability to only focus on the negatives of certain issues and to enhance the details in stories to have a larger shock factor which is something that they try to aim from rather than telling to hard truth and showing the things people need to see. The articles that I have chooses are just a small portion of the media showing abuse to the viewers.

The first article is about elder abuse and it not being spoken about and not being reported when it is witnessed. Margaret MacPherson the head of a campaign called “It’s Not Right ! “ which was created to stop elder abuse and to change social norms of bystanders and turn them into the first people

In the article its spoke about the campaign trying to change how people view older adults and the demeaning language that is used against them (Goar, 2015). While analyzing the article a connection began to form with the article and the topic of media analysis and the way that older adults are presented to the public and the media’s eye. The media will paint a picture of a diverse community to send out a specific message by creating an image that will only send out that message and one of the diverse communities are older adults (Goveas, 2015). The article brings out that people think of older adults a specific way and they think of them very negatively and some if not a lot of the views that people can have of older adults is due to the media and propaganda by reporting and conveying particular type of information that will increase the viewer’s negative views (Goveas, 2015). Some of the negative views that the media presents is that older adult are just old and the can sometimes be related to babies because they are very needy but they are also most times seen as a burden that people don’t want to take care of and they just send them to retirement homes. The population of older adults are need more representation to show that they aren’t just dependent on other but, they can also be very independent and most of the times we don’t see any positive representation. As a social worker it is important to let the client know that they are much more then what the media might say that they are and another important thing for a social worker should do is help build opportunity to show them and others they are independent and not everyone is the same. As Journalist it is important to cover different ages and cultural backgrounds and just have a broader population to work with instead of maybe working with

In 1981, Congress proposed enactment to build up a national focus on senior manhandle, however the bill never achieved the floor of Congress. At last, in 1989, Claude Pepper presented that proposition as a revision to the Older Americans Act. The national focus was subsidized the next year and started the central government's particular sense of duty regarding this zone, yet with little measures of cash. However, at any rate senior manhandle had been perceived in government enactment. At first the conceptualization of this issue was not of grown-ups requiring security and wellbeing.…

Ryan Grenoble’s article “A White Terrorist Is a ‘Troubled Loner’, But Unarmed Black Teens Are ‘Thugs’” is a brief article on the Huffington Post. While many would immediately discredit an article from this outlet do to its left leaning tendency it is not always reasonable to do so. The article can be still very well written and may offer insight. This is all depending on the author of the article of course. Grenoble brings up and confronts the use of loaded or certain words in media coverage.…

The Freedom Riders is one example where the truth was either hidden or revealed through the news. Bias where strong in the south where people were segregated meaning that African Americans were usually passed off as troublemakers compared to others who saw the acts of segregation an act of cruelty. The trick to get pass bias is to interpreting the document to discover what is fact and what is fiction. It would deem best for one to gather multiple primary source documents such as first hand accounts. The civil rights movement known as the Freedom Riders was portrayed in both poor and elaborate ways in the news making it a prime case to be interpreted and to find the truth.…

The article “That Camera Won't Save You! The Spectacular Consumption of Police Violence” By Armond R. Towns talks about how the police system is broken and even if you record a cop doing wrong then it probably won't help you out because police “always” do the right thing. It states that even if you have evidence of a police doing the wrong thing then the police will most likely still be able to work at his job and have no punishment. The first word I chose was the word media.…

In another study by McDevitt (1996) two different data sets were gathered, where one was of a national New York Times Index and the other was from a local Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. All news stories that were relevant to child abuse that was found on these two different newspapers were examined. McDevitt (1996) found that, the media visibly has an influence on concerns involving child abuse. It serves to alert, stimulate public judgment on the issues, influence policymakers, and call problem agencies to account. (McDevitt, Suzzanne; 1996).…

Over the years the media has caused a lot of controversy with public opinion on racial, political and even matters in other countries. A lot of these controversies have caused Riots, the Rodney King Story, Racism and bias in the workplace/school systems, segregation and plain old stereotypes. There are so many developments that arise in the public because of racial stereotypes and bias. The media never really helps with this train of thought. The media can make today 's youth corrupt on their idea of how other races really are.…

This article is about what the title says, how older characters are portrayed in Disney films and how it has a lasting effect on how children view the elderly after watching these films. The article talks about how children view older people because of how Disney movies portray them and how if there are stereotypical characteristics of the elderly in the movies, it will rub off on the children who are watching them. I am looking forward to learning many new things this semester. I enjoy learning and look for opportunities to feed my brain. I want to learn as much as I can about the elder so that I can implement these things as a future Gerontologist. As the good old book says in Proverbs 4:7, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Understanding life and the different situations that arise will make things easier and knowing when there is no understanding for certain things is wisdom.…

In today’s society it seems as if the media is starting to take control of people’s ability to think for themselves. There have been multiple cases in which many news broadcasting stations have lied to their viewers in order to spread fear and confuse, when in reality nothing serious had happened. In today’s world there seems to be three reasons in which the media is causing harm in today’s growing society. One particular reason in which the media is causing harm is what many people like to call media bias, which is the practice of how many news journalist decide in which stories to cover and how they want to cover it. After knowing how media bias works, it leads to the second reason in which does the media report fairly and how the news lies…

This portrayal of elderly in the media can not only affect a young person’s attitude toward the elderly, but can also affect the way that the elderly view themselves. The media caters mainly toward children, teens, adolescents, and adults but not necessarily toward the elderly. The lack of media attention or exposer on the role of the elderly in society has made them almost nonexistent and leaves the impression that the elder generation does not matter. They no longer have a significant contribution to society. On the other hand, when the elderly are portrayed through the media, we often find a false depiction is made.…
